Driver Interaction with Passengers Policy

Drivers (whether TSP drivers or individual drivers) can be unsure of what kinds of conversations and behaviours they should have with passengers.  Here are some tips on how to ensure a safe and secure ride for you and your passenger:

  • If a passenger seems to require assistance with their luggage, ask them whether they need assistance
  • Ensure all seat belts are fastened before commencing your trip

DON’T

  • Ask the passenger any personal questions, for example: if they are single or married, have children, where they work etc.
  • Make comments about their appearance
  • Make physical contact or touch a passenger
  • Touch a passenger with a disability even if they if they appear to need assistance unless they have asked you to assist them, and you have obtained permission and made sure of what assistance they want. This includes assistance with boarding or exiting the vehicle, or with fitting a seat belt.
  • Engage in any inappropriate conversations, especially of a sexual nature, even if the rider is doing so. Drivers can respectfully decline to make any comments.
  • Ask a passenger out on a date, or for their phone number

Remember that sexual harassment is unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that makes a person feel offended, humiliated or intimidated.

The way in which drivers behave with a passenger could be perceived as sexual harassment even if they did not intend to offend, humiliate or intimidate the other person.

If drivers are unsure about their obligations, please consult d@rt’s Driver Anti-Discrimination, Vilification, Harassment, Bullying and Victimisation Policy.
