Pre-Trip Safety Procedure for vehicles other than buses and Driver Drug, Alcohol and Fatigue Self-Assessment
Drivers, whether TSP drivers or individual drivers, will inspect their vehicles before the first trip on each operating day, excluding buses, using the checklist below. These drivers can use another pre-trip vehicle safety inspection process, if agreed with d@rt.
Drivers, whether TSP drivers or individual drivers, will self-assess their fitness to drive before the first trip on each operating day using the drug, alcohol, and fatigue criteria. These drivers can use another self-assessment process, if agreed with d@rt.
ACTIONS
Driver Drugs, Alcohol and Fatigue Self-Assessment Checklist
Is it likely that I have any alcohol in my blood or breath?
Do I feel impaired by drugs including medication? |
If you answer Yes to either question, you must not drive.
|
Do I feel unwell or have I got any unmanaged medical issues which might impair my driving ability? | If you answer Yes, you must not drive.
|
Have I performed any work-related activities other than driving for d@rt? | If you have performed other work related activities, these hours must be added to your total work hours and assessed against the d@rt fatigue management policy. |
Sleep self-assessment
Two key questions to ask myself:
How many hours sleep did I have last night? Am I alert, sleepy, or have some signs of sleepiness? |
||
Indicative table of alertness and sleepiness risks | ||
6 or more hours sleep in last 24 hrs AND Alert. | Low Risk | Driver is fit to commence work. |
Between 5 and 5.5 hours sleep in last 24 hours AND some signs of sleepiness. | Moderate Risk | Driver needs to be on high alert and should closely monitor for increasing signs of fatigue. |
Between 5 and 5.5 hrs sleep in last 24 hrs AND sleepy. | High Risk | Driver poses a significant risk and must not drive. |
Less than 5.0 hrs sleep in the last 24 hrs AND sleepy. | Extreme Risk | Driver poses an extreme risk and must not drive. |
* If the self-assessment indicates that the driver is safe to commence work, record this and the date in a format that can be provided to d@rt or a regulator upon request. This can be a diary, loose leaf book or computer record.
